Internal cylindrical grinding

The internal cylindrical grinding process is primarily used to refine internal functional surfaces. A variety of different applications have been developed for this process over the past few decades. As the outer diameter of the grinding wheels used is severely restricted by the inner diameter of the grinding area, the service life of the grinding wheel is one of the most important criteria for economic evaluation of the respective process.

Grain types which are most resistant to wear are predominantly selected for the internal cylindrical grinding process

These include cubic boron nitride (CBN), sintered aluminium oxide and various other aluminium oxides. Vitrified bonds and grit sizes ranging between 54 and 180 are used most frequently in this process. Resin bonds are used if finer surface finish values are required (e.g. Rz < 3 µm). Grinding wheel hardness grades between H and L are typically selected as standard.
